PETROL TANK CONDENSATION – PREVENTION AND REMOVAL Autumn and winter is the time of year when cars, especially those standing outside, tend to become covered in early morning condensation and, if the temperature is low enough, there is even rime frost to be scraped off the windscreens. Has anyone given a thought to the fact that the condensation that forms so readily on the outside of the car can, under certain weather conditions, also form on the inside of the petrol tank? Scandinavians, with their harsher winter conditions, have a ready remedy for the prevention and removal of any condensation that forms and collects in a petrol tank. In all Scandinavian petrol stations there is something called ‘Kondensfjerner’ (literally translated ‘Condensation remover’) that is readily available. Most motorists use it twice a year: once in the autumn and again about halfway through the winter. This motor elixir is sold in small plastic bottles – 100ml – and all one does is empty a bottle down the petrol filler and then fill the tank up. Simple, to say the least! Kondensfjerner mixes with any water in the petrol tank, absorbs it and takes it through the fuel system and into the engine where it is burnt in the normal process of combustion. Something which can never happen with water in its natural state. Ever seen a carburettor float chamber with water bubbles in it when an engine refuses to run properly? “What is this magic potion?”, I hear you ask. Simplicity itself in fact. It’s nothing other thatn methylated spirit! Vodka or gin would do the same job but that’s alcohol abuse and meths is a lot cheaper! Just add 100ml to a full tank of petrol if you suspect you may have water in your fuel tank. A couple of treatments will clear the problem. Happy motoring Kings Lynn Capri Club. |
