Martins Wells 1600 L Pick Up Conversion

I bought the car as a standard 1.6L with only 39k on the clock, then got it professionally conerted by a chap called Colin Wood who owns the premises that MK CapriCare use. He is better than them!
I then had it sprayed by a chap near Huntingdon, as I was at RAF Wyton at the time.
The engine was standard 1600 Pinto, but I fitted a 32/36 Weber off a Mk1 1.6GT, with a K&N filter.
I boarded out the rear bulkhead with MDF and carpetted it. The design was such that I had a huge stowage area where the base of the rear seat used to fit.
I fitted an interior from an LS and grafted an ignition cut-off switch into the dash panel. Then I simply removed the key and took it with me to immobilise the car!
The boot area was plated over and the boot floor replaced with a sheet of metal held in with Dzus fasteners, so I could still use the spare wheel well.
I covered the exposed tops of the rear shocks by bonding on the centre hub caps from the standard steel wheels (the flowerpot shaped ones) They were a perfect fit! Then I cut the tops off them and replaced them with centre caps from Laser alloys. It looked good and meant I could still access the shock nuts if required.
The load area was painted with loads of layers of black hammerite, with a simple rubber mat on the floor.
The car was taken to loads of shows and used to carry the club stand stuff.
Then the second kid arrived and it couldn't be kept as a viable second car. So I sold it to a chap in St Neots.
I now really wish I'd kept it...but at least I can say I did it!

And if anyone ever takes the insides out they'll find my name and the date painted on to the rear bulkhead panel, under the MDF!
